Why is my vehicle doing this?

i have a 1995 astro and having problems when i turn my wheel. the van drives fine but when i turn the wheel to make a left turn, the wheel kinda grinds or something. it does it also when i reverse and turn around left. the tire grinds for a second and then gets back to normal. what could it be?
