Why did Obama only get 52% of the popular vote following one of the most unpopular Presidents ever ?

Shouldn't we have expected to see something like the Reagan/Carter election? Is the electoral vote system fair? Both Democrats and Republicans debate this usually when their party lost but it is often questioned.
